Waabizheshikana: Marten Trail

Another Rails & Trails Experience is here!

As part of the US Steel – Spirit Lake Remediation Project in the Morgan Park neighborhood of Duluth, the city extended the Waabizheshikana (Marten Trail). The new 1.5 mile trail segment parallels the tracks of Duluth’s River Train from Blackmere Park to Mud Lake/Boathouse Point. The trail was opened to the public on July 10, 2024.  The map (below) is from the Waabizheshikana Interpretive Trail Master Plan (2021).

Plus – in 2025 – construction will start on Segment 1 from the  Riverside neighborhood (Spring St) to the Smithville neighborhood (Clyde Ave).

The Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad is proud to be the core of the St Louis River Estuary Rails & Trails Experience.

Walking the Waabizheshikana, paddling the National Water Trail, or riding the LSMR will bring more people to the river’s edge to hear its stories and enjoy the sights.

“The LSMR will pair a historic excursion train with on artistic heritgage trail. and the natural beauty of the St Louis river, creating a destination experience.”
